Butler County Rape Crisis Program

Butler County Rape Crisis Program
by Michelle Alapizco-Beach
Latina Outreach Specialist

In the United States and Latin America today, Latina and indigenous women and children are facing unparalleled epidemic of sexual assault, abuse and harassment. In responding to the quickly changing modern realities, we must actively defend and support the healing of men, women and children by providing the dignity, equality, and freedom that all people deserve.

Butler County Rape Crisis provides many services concerning Sexual Assault.

Our Mission
In 1989, the Community Counseling & Crisis Center established the Butler County Rape Crisis Program to serve the needs of sexual assault victims, their family members, and friends. We seek to reduce the trauma of rape and sexual assault by providing confidential crisis intervention and follow-up support for the victims 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We provide a comprehensive range of services to assist survivors of sexual victimization in their process of recovery and healing. In addition, the Rape Crisis Program works to reduce the incidence of sexual assault in our community by providing rape awareness and risk reduction programs for teens and adults.

Each year, the Rape Crisis Program provides over 1200 crisis contacts for sexual assault victims and their loved ones. An audience of over 6000 participants in our in-school educational programs for children and teens, and over 2000 additional people benefit from other prevention and awareness programs, consultation, and training for professionals.

Sexual assault/abuse in the Latino Community
Men and women of all races and ethnicities perpetrate sexual assault in the United States. However, Latin American cultures have many deeply rooted traditions, which expose women to severe sexual assault/abuse and exploitation in daily life. Women from Latino/Hispanic descent may try to cover their abuse because of fear of bringing shame to the family name.
The philosophy of machismo, a widely held male code of honor and conduct, places strict limits on, and very clearly defines, the “correct” behavior of men and women. Machismo legitimizes the domestic abuse/sexual assault of women and may be perpetuated openly at home, work, and in the streets.
Although Latin American cultures are diverse and dynamic, many positive personal, family and community interactions are greatly valued. These cultural norms, when compared to cultural norms within the United States, may be considered more spiritually healthy. The importance of religion, intense celebration of cultural and heritage and the close interaction of parents, children, extended family and friends are very important.

Our Goal
Butler County Rape Crisis Program seeks to address these critical issues by involving people of all ethnicities. Latino and indigenous communities throughout Butler County and all other counties in Ohio, young people, elders, advocates, social service and medical professionals and law enforcement.
Through a compassionate approach we can join together to light a path for our people out of this crisis. Responding to this emergency will take cross-cultural cooperation, empathy, and a respect for the sacredness of all human relationships.

A Few Rape Statistics in Latin Countries and the United States:
In Mexico: A woman is raped every 9 minutes. In Ecuador: 3 out of every 10 children have been sexually abused by the age of 16. In Puerto Rico: It is calculated that each year 7,000 women are raped and thousands of children are sexually abused in their homes. In Caracas, Venezuela: 20 women are raped every day. In Peru: 75% of all women are raped before their 15th birthday. In Bogotá, Colombia: 10 women are raped every day. In the U.S: An estimated 683,000 women are forcibly raped each year in the United States. Only about 40% of rapes, sexual assaults were reported to the law enforcement on 2003.Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in the United States, someone is sexually assaulted. One out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
